{"id":8843,"date":"2018-04-27T10:22:44","date_gmt":"2018-04-27T16:22:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.altethos.com\/?p=8843"},"modified":"2021-11-18T04:42:06","modified_gmt":"2021-11-18T11:42:06","slug":"keynote-transcript-ethan-bach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altethos.com\/keynote-transcript-ethan-bach\/","title":{"rendered":"Keynote Transcript: Ethan Bach, Denver Vision: The Meow Wolf Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Last year<\/b> <b>we hosted a similar event<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, right in this room, called Our Vision for Denver. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>This year,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we decided to speak on our Denver Vision with a focus on a new big thing happening, Meow Wolf coming to Denver. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have a unique perspective as <\/span><b>I lived in Santa Fe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for thirteen years and have lived in Denver for almost three years. I\u2019ve been an artist for over twenty years and like most of you, <\/span><b>I worked day jobs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then worked on my art at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Watch the entire keynote below.<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l7TMR_GHKJU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b>I witnessed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what was happening in <\/span><b>the evolution of Meow Wolf<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pretty closely. At one point I served on the<\/span><b> Javier for the Arts committee<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with now<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Meow Wolf CEO <\/span><b>Vince Kadlubek.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We helped former mayor Javier Gonzales get elected. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now Meow Wolf is coming to Denver.<\/span><b> It seems only right that I would help navigate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Denver community through this shift. I see this as a <\/span><b>huge opportunity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this city. <\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as we all know, <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artist communities are <\/span><b>notoriously underfunded<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world is changing rapidly and communities around the globe are witnessing <\/span><b>increased rents<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where there is <\/span><b>a financial disparity there is gentrification<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And just like many cities in the world, we are experiencing that in Denver.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The Meow Wolf Effect is an intimate and intentional look into a cultural phenomenon sparking the creative economy in a way that I have not witnessed in my lifetime.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> My plan is to explore the Meow Wolf Effect through our blog series, public events, and collaborations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a <\/span><b>unique opportunity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to explore and experience this phenomenon as being one of the first cities Meow Wolf is coming to. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>many influencers out there making a change<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meow Wolf is one of them. We have several in <\/span><b>this community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including <\/span><b>our panelists<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whom I look forward to speaking within a few minutes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>You are all the experts on this town and on your experience<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That is why you are here. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What I can do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is help facilitate the beginnings of a conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I want to help create a new possibility for you, my community.<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The possibility I see is an interconnected community that spans across the state of Colorado and into New Mexico (why not) that is inspired to create a new economy that is supportive for creative innovators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Think of the <\/b><b>most amazing community<\/b><b> that you can imagine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What do you want that to look like? <\/span><b>Let\u2019s create that. <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An opportunity to do what is your purpose with love and support from your community. That\u2019s what I envision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make a living and thrive doing something that you love while inspiring others. That\u2019s what I envision.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More ability to have the influence to shape the world in a way that you want to see it. That\u2019s what I envision.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>This is our moment of opportunity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If we do this with great intention, we can make a huge shift in the economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Traditionally, artists have not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sought out to build businesses and focus on the creative economy. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t feel supported by the current economic structure supporting creative jobs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And like every other human we have a negative dialog going on in our heads.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of us even believe that we must suffer to be real artists. We place social pressure on other artists by calling them \u201csell outs\u201d if they make money. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years ago I decided to change those beliefs in myself. Why I started Alt Ethos and DATA.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I no longer wanted to live hand to mouth and work for someone that wasn&#8217;t necessarily treating me with respect. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to have a larger influence in the world and these organizations will allow a bigger reach.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I want to have money to create more opportunities for everyone.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>I want to <\/b><b>share with you today some of my what-ifs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ask that you add to that list. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my<\/span> <b>favorite clear indicators in identifying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0your what-ifs is <\/span><b>judgment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>uncomfortability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>contrast if you will.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>I want to ask, what are your what-ifs?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I encourage you right now and throughout this event to think about in what ways are you unsatisfied with the Denver Arts community?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> What are you unsatisfied with or fearful of with Meow Wolf coming to town? Keep that and we will touch back on it later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it gentrification? Is it access to space? Is it funding? Is that jobs? Is that all the above? Now take that statement and turn it into a\u00a0 positive action &#8211; something that you are going to do to work on finding positivity in that problem. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the facts as we know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meow Wolf is coming to town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meow Wolf anticipates 1.5 million people a year to their Denver site. I anticipate 3 to 5 million people a year. Now think about that &#8211; 5 million people a year coming to Denver to spend money in the creative economy. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What opportunities are there? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where are these people going to stay where they can eat?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where can they get their entertainment? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are they going to buy as a souvenir? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What kind of art will they buy? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where will they want to visit when they like to do it in a group as part of a tour?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>So I just want to say that this isn\u2019t about whether or not you like Meow Wolf.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not whether or not you agree with the way that they\u2019re going about expressing their art. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not about whether or not they can hire you. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or if they you think they favored one group of people over another. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><b>This is about harnessing the energy with strategic planning in order to make the best possible outcome. This is happening. <\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>So tonight and moving forward, we will all be gathering knowledge.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>What do you want to do with this knowledge?<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you want to sit around and complain and point fingers and say I can\u2019t have that we can\u2019t do this we can\u2019t do that how come they&#8217;re doing this is how come they&#8217;re doing that? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you want to use this as an opportunity for a catalyst for change?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We already have some ideas of what is going to happen. We can look at Santa Fe and we can compare our own economy and how things are going here and we can take some guesses we can take some risks and we can enjoy ourselves along the way as a community.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what if we could do that? What if we could do this together? Let\u2019s make this city in this state the best experience we could ever imagine. You\u2019re welcome to come with me and you\u2019re welcome to lead the way. I promise to walk beside you. <\/span><b>Together, let\u2019s make some change.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are so many people in this community already doing great things. It&#8217;s not fair to just sit back and say that they need to do more or do it this way or that. These people are putting their necks on the line. Through their experiences, they have a lot of information that if we all could harness it, would help make a better community. Let\u2019s take advantage of some of that now.
